I welcome you to the Second Session of the Covenant International Model United Nations. The Covenant International Model United Nations was birthed out of the need to raise the next generation of world leaders with the values of relevant diplomacy. The first session of the CIMUN successfully hosted diplomatically-minded African youths from Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, 15 Nigerian Universities and 2 High Schools between January 15-20, 2019.
The theme for this UN year 2020 is The Future We Want, the UN We Need: Reaffirming our Collective Commitment to Multilateralism. The world we live in today is plagued with many challenges from the Coronavirus epidemic, burning ecosystem as seen in Australia and the Amazon, rising nuclear tensions, terrorism, cyber challenges, insecurity, unemployment, gender disparity, economic crisis, exits from organizations and the list continues. The United Nations was formed to promote global peace and address these challenges. However, several collective goals have been set-back by our desire to achieve our specific interests. We must endeavour to keep our differences aside and enhance positive collaboration to create an amazing future together for ourselves and future generations.
As diplomats, we are presented another opportunity to discuss, deliberate, constructively argue, draft working papers and adopt resolutions that would provide solutions to global challenges. Within a few days, we should utilise our unique differences towards productive multilateralism and protect the existence of our 75-year commitment towards a sustainable global community.
I hope that we have successful deliberations and adopt meaningful resolutions that can be implemented to achieve the Future We Want..
